Welcome to Your Corner of the Sky

Welcome.  My name is Steve Horowitz.  I am the proud father of a young LGBTQ+ person, a Certified Life and Relationship Coach, plus an LGBTQ+ Ally/Advocate.  I created Your Corner of the Sky to be a safe place to foster a better understanding of LGBTQ+ family dynamics, identity negotiations and diversity inclusion.

My Story

Almost 15 years ago, during one of our “every other weekend” together, my son spent most of the morning with his bedroom door closed.  This was  something he rarely did, so I had a feeling something was up.  After a few hours, he came to talk and simply said, “Dad, I’m gay.”  When all I did was knowingly smile, nod my head yes and say nothing, a look of confusion appeared on his face. He proceeded to try 2 or 3 different ways to tell me he was gay. My response remained unchanged, just a smile and gentle nod of my head yes.

Finally, when he said, “Dad, I don’t like girls”, I stopped being PITA Dad and a big grin came to my face.  All I said was, “tell me something I don’t already know.” At that point, a huge smile of relief covered his face.  Thankfully in many ways it’s been there ever since.

From that moment on, I have been doing everything I can to learn more about the queer community they belong to and do whatever I possibly can to support their life decisions.  This doesn’t mean I don’t question him, nor does it stop me disagreeing with their choices.  In addition, it has not stopped me from being the PITA Dad  and providing my parental advice.

This definitely does mean that whatever decision or path they take, they know I’m there for them.  I do this for no reason other than because I love my child.  Our relationship continues to be very open and growing consistently.  We are both teaching each other about life, sexuality, and family.

My Work

I am stunned when hearing stories about the difficult times young people are having when opening up about their queerness. It’s shocking to hear how teenagers and young adults are ostracized or marginalized by their families.  I cannot believe there are still families that kick their children out of their home or worse, bring them to places to have their gayness conditioned or prayed out of them.

Long before I became a Life Coach, in my professional experiences as an attorney, recruiter, and mortgage salesperson, my approach to my clients was always the same.  I would first learn about my clients as people, discover what their needs were, and then educate them about their options.  It was always their choice as to whether to use my services or buy my product. To paraphrase a slogan from an old NY clothing chain, “an educated consumer is my best customer.”

The more stories I’ve heard about the difficulties faced by young members of the Queer community, the more I was drawn to helping them.  Using this angst, I curated all my knowledge and experience over the past 15 years into several LGBTQ+ Life Coaching programs to support the Queer community.

For individuals, my coaching programs make it easier for young queer people to stay connected or reconnect with their family after they have opened up about their gender identity.  For companies, my programs cover DEI Inclusion Compliance matters at the corporate level as well as one that are geared to making the workplace an inclusive and safe environment for all.

Join me as we embark on a transformative journey, building stronger bonds and embracing your identity with pride and joy. Feel free to reach out, share your story, or ask questions. Let’s create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive!
